Holiday Hot Toddy

Holiday Hot Toddy

The holidays are a time to celebrate and be cozy—and what better way than with a warm coffee cocktail. Inspired by hot buttered rum, this spicy little number mixes our limited-edition Celebration Blend coffee with a frozen spice-infused cream spiked with Kartoffelschnapps, a flavourful potato spirit from our good friends at Pemberton Distillery. It’s smooth and creamy like eggnog with just the right amount of kick—the perfect heartwarmer for afternoons in front of the fire and post-turkey chitchat.

Best of all, you can prepare the frozen cream mixture in advance and enjoy a Holiday Hot Toddy with or without friends all through the holidays. Cheers to that!

Holiday Hot Toddy

A Salt Spring Coffee original created by our Coffee Quality Manager Stamatis Papadopolos
Makes ~20 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (500 mL) organic whipping cream from Avalon Dairy
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 10 whole cloves
  • ½ vanilla bean (or 1 Tbsp of vanilla extract)
  • 1 cup (250 mL) Kartoffelschnaps from Pemberton Distillery*
  • 12 oz brewed Celebration Blend coffee from Salt Spring Coffee (per serving)
  • 0.5 oz dark rum (per serving)

* Substitute dark rum if you must, but we highly recommend picking up a bottle of Kartoffelschnaps for the holidays. We hear they have a great organic coffee liqueur too!

Directions

One or more days in advance:

  1. Combine the whipping cream, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves and vanilla beans seeds (here’s a how-to) in a saucepan.
  2. Steep, just below simmering, for 1 to 2 hours.
  3. Strain the mixture directly into a Mason jar, add the Kartoffelschnaps and freeze it uncovered. Once the mixture is completely cool, it will resemble soft-serve ice cream and should be stable enough to scoop with a spoon. You can keep it in the freezer, covered, for up to two weeks.

When you’re ready to serve:

  1. Warm your cups with hot water while you brew your Celebration Blend coffee. We recommend using a French press (video and brew tips here). Strong, rich brews work well here.
  2. Fill each cup with coffee and 0.5 oz of dark rum, and top with a teaspoonful of flavoured cream.
  3. Raise a glass to the holidays!
