Business of Good

Business of Good

Salt Spring Coffee is honoured to be nominated in 2 categories in the inaugural Business of Good Awards held by BCBusiness Magazine: Workplace Wellness & Inclusivity

Inclusivity

Pride at the Vancouver Aquarium

Celebrating Pride at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Salt Spring Island is known for being open, friendly, and trusting. Naturally, Salt Spring Coffee has inherited this in its DNA. Our team consists of a tapestry of individuals coming from different backgrounds: India, China, Germany, Mexico, Cambodia, Australia, and Canada. Each month, we have a team lunch featuring cuisine from one of the countries our team members are from.

We are proud to have a large representation of the LGBTQA community on our team. As well, we are a sponsor of the Vancouver Aquarium Pride event. We show our support online and in our cafes, letting our pride flags fly (both digitally and in real life).

Even though the coffee industry has traditionally been male-dominated, we boast an all-female coffee roasting team!

While it is not a prerequisite for hiring that someone is of a certain ethnic background, LGBTQA, or gender, we tend to attract a diverse group of individuals. We see value in having a wide range of perspectives, voices, and experiences.

_______________

Workplace Wellness

Our quadruple bottom line includes Planet, People, Profit, and Purpose. Guided by purpose, we believe that by treating the planet well (by insisting on organic), treating the people well (our farmers, staff, and our customers), profit should follow.

Salt Spring Coffee conducts an annual anonymous survey with its employees on job satisfaction and work-life balance to make sure the staff is happy, engaged, and feel purposeful.

We are proud to report that over 95% of our staff feel that:

  • the company operates with their values
  • the mission of Salt Spring Coffee makes them feel their job is important
  • they have the opportunities to grow and develop their skills
  • their manager/supervisor recognizes and appreciates them

We believe people are our most important asset. Happy employees stick around, and the longer an employee has been with the team, the more knowledge they have of our company product and ethos.
