Salt Spring Coffee Best for the World

We are on B Lab’s ‘Best for the World’ Overall list

We are a Certified B Corporation and proud to be one of over 2000 companies who’ve earned the title world wide.

In September 2017 we received the Best For Environment Overall for the effectiveness of our sustainability programs and our commitment to the environment. Forbes calls the Best for the World 2017 honourees, the Most Important List of Businesses in the World. Salt Spring Coffee has now made the Best for the World list three times, in 2012, 2016 and now 2017. This puts us in the top 10 percent of more than 2000 certified B Corporations, from 15 industries and 17 countries.

B Corp’s certification goes beyond looking at our products and evaluates our whole company and the impact we have on our workforce, suppliers, farming communities — and the planet that sustains us all. We are proud to be part of a movement working toward a fundamental change in business, one that matches our mission to help people live and work in communities that are closely connected to their natural environment.

The Change We Seek:

Salt Spring Coffee origins traces back to an organic farm on a Canadian island renowned for its sense of community, fairness and sustainability. Our motto is Believe in Being Better and for two decades our actions have been informed by those island roots in organic farming.

All of the beans we roast and sell are 100-per-cent organic, and we has put a premium on fairness and community partnerships, collaborating and growing in step with the people who form the links of its supply chain. We were the first Canadian coffee company to join 1% for the Planet, a global movement of businesses donating at least one per cent of annual revenues to environmental organizations, and today use those donations as part of our Fair to Farmer initiative, working directly with farmers and their communities to fund practices and projects that improve our relationships with each other and the environment.

We released our first annual Corporate Sustainability Report, documenting our pioneering approach to taking responsibility for the full life-cycle of our products, from seed to cup, and working hand-in-hand with farmers.

At home, we have raised funds and awareness around forest conservation in partnership with Canopy, and co-founded, with LOCO BC, the Zero Hero Waste Program to help businesses reduce their waste and related greenhouse gas emissions; Salt Spring Coffee now sends less than 9 per cent of its materials to landfills. Our international Fair to Farmer projects include working with EOS International to install solar panels on remote farms in Nicaragua, and teaming up with a gender justice pioneer, Uganda’s Bukonzo Joint Co-operative Union, to help its 5,200 farmer members — 85 per cent of them women — conduct regular tasting tests on their organic beans.
