1% for the Planet
For two decades, Salt Spring Coffee has built sustainability and social responsibility into our business model. We know that the environmental challenges we all face are enormous and it can feel daunting, even debilitating, to take on such massive change alone. That is why we believe in working together, in finding partners locally and internationally who share our commitment to reducing and eliminating the harmful consequences of our shared activities.
In 2012, we became the first Canadian coffee company to join 1% for the Planet, a global movement of companies donating at least one per cent of their annual revenues to environmental organizations worldwide. It means that part of the proceeds from every bag of coffee beans we sell goes toward projects and organizations working toward a truly sustainable planet.
Our membership not only allows us to be more strategic with our giving, but it’s also an opportunity to be part of a network of like-minded leaders, enabling us to do together what cannot be done alone. Working together with 1% for the Planet offers a simple, tangible and proactive way for businesses to be a part of the solution.
Our donations through this program have brought us closer together with some amazing people and organizations in British Columbia and Canada. With LOCO BC, for example, we have pioneered a program to help businesses reduce their waste and associated carbon emissions from the average rate of 56 per cent to less than 25 per cent; today Salt Spring Coffee sends only 9 per cent of material to the landfill or incinerator.
Salt Spring Coffee will continue to take what we have built and learned in 20 years of business — about organic coffee farming, sustainable business methods, our network of partnerships and connections — and put it all into action through our 1% for the Planet program. We are working on projects directly with the people who grow our beans, helping them find and build solutions that benefit not just our supply chain, but their communities and ultimately the planet that sustains us all.
