It's about a new type of company. One that puts people before power and principles over personalities. As many of you know, Salt Spring Coffee is a values-based business but did you know that we’re also a Certified B Corporation? And, we’re one of only 350 companies who’ve earned the title of a Certified B Corp in North America.
B Corps are a band of social entrepreneurs, and we’re on the move. Bloomberg Business Week recently announced that two of America’s top five most promising social entrepreneurs are B Corporations - check it out
So what’s a B Corp exactly? B Corporation is a certification that goes beyond looking at just our coffee – it looks at the whole company and the impact that we have on our workforce, our suppliers, our community and the environment. You can think of it as a certification for sustainable business like fair trade is to coffee or LEED is to green buildings. It’s an assessment of the whole package, not just its parts.
There are a lot of companies out there claiming to be good these days: “drink this it’s good for you, buy this it's good for the planet”. What a B Corporation does is dig a little deeper, asking why as businesses we stop at simply being good, when we can be even better. Being a Certified B Corp is about being a better employer, a better leader in our local communities and a better steward of the environment.
It’s about a new type of company. One with confident leaders who have a clear vision and who put people before power and principles over personalities. Full stop. It’s not about one product.
Who else is in the Certified B Corp mix? The B Lab publishes a list of all Certified B Corps so you can learn more about the companies that meet the same rigorous, independent and transparent standards of social and environmental performance that we do. View B Corp’s directory
Isn’t it time we all start to B the change we seek?
