Our Coffee Subscription Pick: October 16 - 31

Peru, Finca Marin.

We discovered Finca Marin by chance in July 2010 while on a direct trade sourcing trip to the Villa Rica district of Peru. One night over dinner, staff from a local NGO told us about a neighbouring farm that they believed was producing exceptionally high quality coffee given the terroir of the region. And so, without hesitation we scheduled a visit to Finca Marin.

The Coffee.

In all of my years cupping coffee, I’ve seen very few Peruvians that cup higher than 85 (on a 100-point scale). Why? It's because their flavours tend to be more soft and subtle, which can result in a slightly lower cupping score. Well, we know there’s an exception to every rule, and this coffee is THE exception. Recently, Peru, Finca Marin with its delicious apricot and citrus fruit flavours cupped at 88-points.

A Biodynamic Farm.

Owned and operated by the three Marin brothers, Finca Marin is a certified organic coffee farm and its coffee is grown and harvested in accordance with Rudolph Steiner’s teachings on biodynamic agriculture. Biodynamics calls for new thinking in every aspect of the food system. From how land is owned to how farms are capitalized to how food is produced, distributed and prepared. If you’d like to gain a deeper understanding of biodynamic agriculture we encourage you to visit biodynamics.com for detailed information on the farming practice.

Enjoy your cup,

Banks Thomas, Director of Coffee
