Fair to Farmer Direct™

We see Salt Spring Coffee as our way of keeping the fair trade movement, well... moving.

In 2006 we made the decision to move beyond the traditional trade relationship with coffee co-ops and farmers - dealing with brokers - and established a direct trade model.

This evolved into the Fair to Farmer Direct program in 2010. All of the coffee in our F2F program is certified organic and certified direct trade.

We also encourage long-term purchasing contracts with our partner farmers and co-ops. This gives the coffee communities that we work with heightened income security and greater access to credit - a transactional detail that's often overlooked by the coffee buying community but one that we know is of tremendous value.

The relationship with our partner farmers and co-ops is transparent and the communication frequent - our commitment goes beyond buying coffee.

What Fair to Farmer Direct provides:

  • We purchase our coffee from certified organic farms and co-ops only
  • We pay our farmers more than the fair trade base price
  • We encourage long-term purchasing contracts with our partner farmers in an effort to provide income security as well as greater access to credit
  • All transactions and purchasing contracts are transparent to both buyer and seller. We communicate with our Fair to Farmer Direct communities a minimum of three times per year

  • We visit each of our Fair to Farmer Direct coffee growing communities at least once every three years; many of them we visit once a year
  • We support the efforts of our Fair to Farmer Direct co-ops to continuously improve upon the quality of their coffee

Fair to Farmer Direct is third-party certified by Quality Certification Services (QCS)
