We are one of Western Canada's most respected artisan roasters of 100% certified organic, fair-trade, shade-grown, and carbon-neutral coffees. We use fuel-efficient cars and bio-diesel fuel in our delivery trucks, and approximately 1% of our sales go towards social and environmental causes. We sell merchandise that has been screened as environmentally friendly. At our cafés, we actively promote the use of reusable travel mugs instead of paper cups. We are also one of the world's first carbon neutral coffee roasters, and our efforts have been recognized by the David Suzuki Foundation.

Background on Our New Headquarters Project

From a small-island roaster to one of Canada's most respected micro roasters, Salt Spring Coffee Company's commitment to sustainability has been a priority. Since 1996, founders Mickey McLeod and Robbyn Scott knew that a delicate balance was required. They wanted to provide the best possible tasting coffee and also do the right thing for the planet. They've done both by creating a triple bottom line company that is fully committed to walking the talk throughout its operations.

As an important move to improve and lean efficiencies, reduce waste and increase productivity, the company plans to centralize its operations.  Currently, the business is run from two separate buildings at different locations on the Island.  The roasting house is located at #1-156 Alders Avenue and the Administrative Offices are at 320 Upper Ganges Rd., a 3 km separation. Construction of the proposed new headquarters would offer the company a centralized site that would combine both operations and administrative functions under one roof.

In keeping with the celebration of the Company's commitment to its social and environmental leadership the shift to a larger, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Standard certified Headquarters on Salt Spring Island will improve efficiencies, reduce environmental impact and facilitate continued growth of this highly successful triple bottom line business. The building is designed by respected "Green" Design Consultant, George Grams and will offer the Island a leadership opportunity for ecologically and environmentally integrating the symbiosis of a highly green business into a very green conscious community.

The "Green" Design Consultant:

Me head shot.jpgGeorge Grams was selected as the Design Consultant for this unique building opportunity because of his background in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building construction and environmental credentials. He has been a practicing Design Consultant for over 30 years.  Mr. Grams ran a small group of companies specializing in low environmental impact design and construction for 14 years before coming to Canada. He was the former chairman of the Scottish Ecological Design Association and has lectured in low environmental impact architecture to students at several universities in Britain and at Pamplona University in Spain.  In addition, he is a former consultant to the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland for whom he designed and delivered a number of Continuing Education courses on low environmental impact design strategies and policies for practicing architects throughout Scotland.  He is a permanent resident on Salt Spring Island.

written by Jason Jubenville, September 17, 2009
Hi, I am inquiring about marketing and selling you product here in Duncan. I am currently in the works of opening a coffee kiosk at the Somenoes dog park located on the corner of Lakes Rd. and Beverly St.

How do I get started with your product? What do you offer?

Thank you,

Jason Jubenville

Ditto on what Jason says.I talked to your marketing guy and I'm sad to say you are raising a baby dinosaur. I would like you to let go of your business "training" and become visionary in your distribution of your coffee. Yeah, its a lot easier to sell a truckload to SaveOn Foods than me or Jason but we have to start small and can't buy a ton of coffee at a time so we can get it wholesale to resell .
Your model of helping the little guy on the growing end is nice. How about helping the little guy on the selling end???
