Salt Spring Coffee Company Questions Island Trust’s Ad Hoc Policies

Ganges, Salt Spring Island, July 12, 2009 - For just over a year, Salt Spring Coffee Company has had public plans to build a green campus on a lot owned by Company owner Mickey McLeod. The current lot zoning does not allow for commercial activities, so the Company has submitted a rezoning application to the Islands Trust.

On July 2, one of the two Islands Trustees handling Salt Spring Coffee Company’s rezoning application confirmed that she was unable to support the application further because of two fundamental issues: the risk of further sprawl and the number and nature of covenants being defined to control activities on the lot. The Coffee Company has several concerns about the Trust’s decision.

It would be a tremendous boon to the Island. All people concerned about sustainability issues will benefit and the Island will be designated as a role model in what is possible. It is ecologically sound.
I would have concern about the odour factor for nearby residents. Guarantee this aspect and there should be no further resistance.

Instant Karma
written by Ramone Grant, August 09, 2009
What could be happening here is a case of bad karma. Maybe Mr. Mcleod has done something in his past or maybe done some person wrong. Has his business practices been entirely ethical. Maybe he needs to look inward to see if some actions in his life is putting him and his business into jeopardy. Or maybe he should look at the people around him and see if there is a negative force that is holding things back. Sometimes the obvious is the haziest.

I am most assuredly correct.

In one of my on the forum site postings I mentioned that the Saltspring Coffee people are probably too high on their own caffeine. I am probably correct on this assumption as I notice in one of their statements that spelling is not one of the strong points. Maybe they should go over every word they have expounded in print, blog, forum, application etc. and see where they have erred. Sloppy spelling from a corporation no matter how large or small is a general reflection of their business practices.

Hello:
I read with interest the article in the Globe today regarding your battle with the Islands Trust.

I subsequently spent time reviewing the development process and environmental reviews on your webpage.

It is clear that your troubles with the IT are long from over. I can surmise by the volume of work completed your firm has spent signficant effort, invested your heart and spent large sums of money in an honest effort to convince the unconvinceable/fickle leadership of the IT.

Based on my understanding of and experience with the IT, I can assure you your soft costs will continue to rise. Never underestimate the willngness of naysayers to reach into your pocket so you can provide them with additional "studies" and expert opinions. In the end, nothing will cause them to re-evaluate their position or change their minds. They just need your money to help slay their guilt.

Ultimately, it is about your quality of life. Should you stay and fight, I would say it isn't worth it. There are alternatives remember that.

Your project and your goals are without a doubt exemplary and should be rewarded and encouraged.

I would like to extend and invitation to you to cut your losses now and move to a new location. Being shameless and clearly self interested, I am asking you to consider moving to my community,Powell River.

We need people like you, innovators and leaders. What can we offer? Well the obvious starts with relatively inexpensive land. You can pick up at least 10 acres here for what you paid for your two on SS. We also offer cleaner zoning and a business friendly environment.

And NO ISLANDS TRUST.

But, the really important thing is we are a community on the cusp, looking for leadership and smart companies that will transform the makeup of our region. You fit that model, you can be on top instead of kicked around by wealthy, well fed "artists" that forgot what the real struggle is about.

Contact Scott Randolph at 604 485 0325, he is our ec dev man. I can assure you, he will want you here.

Please come to Powell River. Cheap land, and a need of innovators like SS Coffee to lead us into the new green world.

Yours truly Chris Roddan
I will call you to follow up on my offer.
