Over the last ten years, TransFair® Canada has brought massive customer awareness to fair trade products, and the farmers tell us it has helped strengthen their co-ops, their farms, and their families.
However, at this point in our evolution and as an industry leader, we’re gearing up to improve our trade practices and joining a growing trend in going 'beyond fair trade' minimums through our own Fair to Farmer Direct™ program. With our growing purchasing power, the Fair to Farmer Direct™ program will enable us to work more closely with coffee farmers and co-ops to offer them something more than current fair trade practice.
Beginning with our Micro-Lot Coffees, you will begin to see the Fair to Farmer Direct™ logo roll out across our Culinary and Classic coffee lines. This logo is your assurance of our commitment to offereing our coffee farmers more than the current fair trade practice. It will appear on all packaging where coffees are traded under this program..
Thanks to those who came out on Saturday to taste Chantel's Barista Championship Signature Drink!
The long weekend crowd made things a bit busier than usual--a good
problem to have!--but those who got to sample Chantel's spiced
blackberry and espresso concoction really liked it.
We recently worked with our cardboard box supplier to redesign our shipping box. This is our go-to box that holds eight 400-gram bags of whole bean coffee.
A relatively small box like this might not seem like a big deal, but when we order over 60,000 of them per year, the impact adds up.
Congratulations to our own Chantel Welsh, barista extraordinaire at our Ganges cafe, who competed in the Western Regional Barista Championship last Saturday. One of only a few first-time competitors, Chantel represented Salt Spring Coffee with style and flavour.
Whether you're near Vancouver or Victoria, come out to play with Salt Spring Coffee this weekend, August 29-30!
In Victoria, come cheer on Chantel, one of our Ganges baristas, at the Western Regional Barista Championship! As a competitor in this prestigious event, Chantel will have just 15 minutes to create 12 beverages: 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 signature creations. Our director of coffee, Banks, reports that Chantel's signature drink is out of this world, but we can't give away our secrets just yet! Come out this weekend to see what Chantel has come up with. You can find all the details on the competition here.
In Vancouver, join us at Justice Rocks! This "summer finale" presented by Pivot Legal Society is celebrating its second year. While you're sipping on the finest coffee around, you can groove to some awesome live music, watch skate demos, check out the best b-boys and b-girls competing in a break-off, boogie with three fabulous marching bands, and even take a shot at the dunk tank. And of course, you can get to know some of Vancouver's most influential change-makers in environmental justice, social justice, youth groups and campaigns. It all goes down at Strathcona Park, Saturday from 2-8 PM. Check out the full lineup here.
Wherever you are, have a great weekend and enjoy some amazing coffee.
Salt Spring Coffee Company Questions Island Trust’s Ad Hoc Policies
Ganges, Salt Spring Island, July 12, 2009 - For just over a year, Salt Spring Coffee Company has had public plans to build a green campus on a lot owned by Company owner Mickey McLeod. The current lot zoning does not allow for commercial activities, so the Company has submitted a rezoning application to the Islands Trust.
